In the market for some new reading accessories in 2023? You won’t need to look any further. Whether you’re hoping to build yours dream reading nook and are itching for a cozy blanket and mug to complement your bookish aesthetic or you’re a reader on the go looking to have the perfect bookish tote bag, annotation tools, and a solid Ex Libris stamp to ensure your books always come back home, these reading accessories will be your go-to picks for the year.

These essential reading accessories for 2023 include both some fun gadgets and real practical tools. The prices are mostly budget friendly, and all of these would make fantastic gifts for anyone in your life (and you, obviously) who loves reading. Not only will these help fit more reading into your busy life — or, conversely, help you slow down in your reading life if that’s one of your goals — but many of these reading accessories are able to be personalized or customized. Snag a favorite color or have your name added to give it a little extra special touch.

Let’s take a look at some of the best new reading accessories and some beloved favorites for building a wonderfully bookish 2023.

The Best Reading Accessories 2023

It’s only natural to begin with two options for great bookish tote bags, so you can take your reading on the go.

Image of a canvas tote bag with black text that says "read more books & dismantle systems of oppression."

Is this tote bag subtle enough for you? $30

Image of a bright yellow tote bag with white text that says "it's a good day to read banned books."

One way to help spread the word about today’s current reality of book censorship is to have something on you or with you that can spark that conversation. This sunshine yellow tote bag not only cracks open that dialog, but it is a sign you care about intellectual freedom and the freedom to read. $31+, with size options.

Now on to ways to get comfortable/cozy/keep your current reads in a safe, easy-to-find place. These next reading accessories do just that.

Image of a cream colored corduroy book pillow with an open book on top.

Whether you read with a book in your lap or at a table/desk, this book pyramid pillow is an excellent gadget for saving your hands and wrists. You can use it with print books or with a tablet, and the corduroy fabric gives it a nice, cozy feel. There are several colors to choose from $25.

Image of a nightstand. On it is a wooden triangle that allows a book to rest open on top, with space for glasses beneath.

Keep this book rest on your night stand or in your reading nook and know you can set down your book for a quick coffee break or weeks’ long rest and it won’t break the book’s spine. Plus, there’s space for more reading accessories inside the triangle. $50

Image of a floating display shelf. It is black and says "now reading" with a book inside.

And here’s an option for being a little extra in the best way: it’s a floating shelf you can display what you’re now reading. $21 and up, with color options.

Image of several thumb book page holders, each of which looks like it has rainbow sprinkles inside.

Another fun–and extremely practical–reading accessory in the “holding things” category is the book page holder. There are a wide variety from which to choose, but these thumb page holders that look like they’re filled with rainbow sprinkles are my favorite. $15, with four different styles from which to choose.

The next category of essential book accessories includes everything you need to get cozy. Think: brewing or pouring your favorite beverage, keeping your body warm, settling in for the long haul.

Image of six brightly colored cork coasters. Each has a book genre on it.

These genre coasters remind me of the little genre stickers on library books (which is, of course, intentional). $30, and you get to choose from several options for the “book” case in which the coasters come.

Image of a glass mug on a table with an open book. In white on the mug are the words "mood reader."

Snuggle in with this mood reader mug that will let you look at whatever delicious beverage you’re enjoying while you read. $17, with some customization options.

Image of a glass with a lid held by a white hand in front of bookshelves. In white on the glass are the words "death by tbr," with an image of a skull and books.

And here’s another option for containing your beverage of choice. This one is perfect for on the go reading and for those of you who prefer cold drinks. $19 and up, with options to customize.

Image of a yellow blanket designed like a library due date card on a gray couch.

As of writing, these library due date card blankets are limited, so snag one ASAP if they’re available. If not, save it and come back — talk about a fun, unique blanket perfect for reading. $52

Image of a black book light with case and charging cord.

No reading accessory roundup would be complete without some kind of reading light. This one is nice because it comes with a case, making it easy to toss in your tote and read on the go. $19

Now onto what could best be categorized as the “tracking” category of book gadgets. Is a bookmark something you use to track? Certainly — you know where you’re at in your current read, and the bookmarks here can do double duty.

Image of a white and blue bookmark that allows you to fill in the books currently on your shelf.

This downloadable and printable bookmark is a bookshelf. You can print it on whatever kind of paper you’d like and use it to track books on your shelf, on your TBR, or the titles you’ve read over a period of time. $4

Image of a bookmark that allows you to track your reading habits. It is being held by a white hand.

If you’re working to build some new reading habits, you’ll want to utilize this handy bookmark that allows you to track whatever is important to you. $3

Image of two wooden book stamps, with an image of what the stamp itself looks like.

Keep tabs on all of your personal collection of books with an Ex Libris/From The Library Of stamp. This one is fun and practical. Get it personalized starting at $31.

Image of a book annotation kit including highlighters, washi tape, a pouch, and more.

If you’re into annotation or want to get into annotating your books, why not snag an entire kit, rather than splurge on all of the tools you need separately? This one comes with highlighters, washi tape, book tabs, and a pouch (you can choose the design you’d like for that!). $22

Image of a set of book recommendation journals. They have a green cover and pink interior.

Keep track of your reading life with a reading journal that allows you to note book reviews, track any reading challenges, and more. This one is really pretty and I love that you could quickly reference books you’d “recco.” $32

Image of two memo pads featuring a worm with books.

What book worm does not need a book worm memo pad? $8

The last reading accessory is one that does not fit into any category, but it is certain to add some fun to your 2023.

Image of a green birdhouse in the shape of a book. The book is titled "Joy of Reading."

Reading is also for the birds with these book style bird houses. Put one outside the window where you read or near your reading hammock and enjoy the literary birds to grace you with their presence. There are a few book options from which to choose. $70

How To Create The Most Adorable Winnie the Pooh Nursery https://bookriot.com/create-a-winnie-the-pooh-nursery/ Tue, 03 Jan 2023 11:31:00 +0000 https://bookriot.com/?p=528008 - Jesse Doogan

]]>

The Hundred Acre Wood is a gentle place where the worst that can happen is a too-blustery day. It’s filled with kind animals who, generally, are interested in helping each other and having a pleasant time. It’s no surprise that it’s a popular nursery theme, with many looking to create their own Winnie the Pooh nursery.

And, boy, do I love a theme. When there’s an opportunity to throw an elaborate party or, better, go overboard making something special for someone I love, I just cannot help myself. So when I had the chance to put together a perfect Winnie the Pooh nursery, I couldn’t resist.

Winnie-the-Pooh went into the public domain this past year, freeing independent artists to create work based on the characters, so this is the perfect time to look for what new things are happening in Pooh’s world. This is also why I decided to limit this nursery to classic Pooh, the one designed by illustrator E.H. Shepherd, instead of Disney’s version.

(Incidentally, I always assumed that E.H. Shepherd based his illustrations on A.A. Milne’s son’s toys, but in researching this article, I learned that Shepherd actually based Pooh on Shepherd’s own son’s doll. While the Milne family dolls are on display in one of the New York Public Library’s buildings, the Shepherd family bear met an untimely end, thanks to a neighborhood dog. But back to more gentle things.)

This is a collection of some of the best nursery items and accessories available based on the art of E.H. Shepherd and A.A. Milne’s characters.

a photo of a Wool Rug with Bees

To lay a foundation for the room, of course you’ll want to start with a rug. I did find a few different rugs that were based on the Shepherd artwork, but I had some questions about the quality, so I thought this wool rug ($75) might be a better bet. It’s not technically Winnie-the-Pooh, but I think it works nicely.

Lambs Ivy Winnie the Pooh Bedding

Then, on to bedding. This cute set ($180) includes a quilt, a fitted crib sheet, and a crib skirt.

Classic Winnie the Pooh Mobile

For above the crib, these soft characters ($45) spin slowly to Braham’s Lullaby.

mobile with knit Winnie the Pooh characters

This handmade mobile is really beautiful ($388). Each character is knit from high-quality wool and filled with an eco-friendly polyfill. They’re little works of art.

Winnie the Pooh Classic Wallpaper

Now, to the walls. This classic Pooh wallpaper ($83/8 foot roll) is so charming, and the gentle cream and black keeps it from being too overwhelming.

Classic Winnie the Pooh Art

But what to hang on the wallpaper? These full-color prints of early illustrations ($41+, depending on size and format) are gorgeous. Hang all six together or break up the set for gifts.

Classic Pooh Quote Illustration Prints

If you’d like the original Shepherd illustrations, these quote prints ($26, depending on size and format) are a great option.

Winnie the Pooh Plush

Of course, you’ll need a Winnie-the-Pooh plush ($30) for your little one to snuggle. This one looks especially soft.

the cover of Winnie the Pooh by A.A. Milne in a hardcover gift edition

And it wouldn’t really be a Winnie the Pooh nursery without the stories themselves. This is a lovely gift edition ($17).

Is that baby still on the way? Here are some great ideas for a Winnie-the-Pooh-themed baby shower. Or are you looking for some sweet Pooh quotes for every part of your life? Or are you just not sure if you’re a Pooh or a Rabbit? Here’s a quiz!

14 Affordable Items to Elevate Your BuJo Book Tracker https://bookriot.com/elevate-your-bujo-book-tracker/ Tue, 03 Jan 2023 11:30:00 +0000 https://bookriot.com/?p=525766 - Isabelle Popp

]]>

I’m resolving to elevate my bujo book tracker game this year. The bullet journal I currently use to organize my life is bare bones, held together by my messy handwriting and a couple of paper clips. And when it comes to reading, I remember the feeling a book gives me much better than any actual details of the plot — or heaven help me, character names. So I can really use bullet journaling to help me remember more about what I read.

Bujo book trackers are also great tools for self-knowledge. If you track your reading habits along with other facets of your life, like moods or sleep, you may be able to see patterns. For me, I can see the cycles of feeling good and reading more. I know isn’t exactly a revolutionary observation. Still, making an effort to read instead of doomscroll can push things into a positive feedback loop. And doing something silly like putting a little sticker in a journal every day that I read is exactly the reward I can use to trick myself into good habits.

Bullet journaling can be very intimidating. When you come across journalers on TikTok or Instagram who are skilled hand-letterers with an army of color coordinating items at their disposal, you may not know where to start. But you don’t have to be like them! I’ve listed some great items that can enhance the aesthetics of your reading journal. Others are simply great workhorses for tracking reading. Plus, I found you lots of great deals. The most expensive items are the stencils, which you can use year after year. So join me on a journey to level up your bujo book tracker.

Stickers for Your Bujo Book Tracker

stickers naming literary genres with thematic illustrations

These iconic stickers might help keep track of which genres you tend to read the most. They would also be incredibly fun on the spines of the books in your personal library. $2.50

mini stickers of open books

If you embrace minimalism in your bujo book tracker but also love stickers, these bare bones little book stickers are ideal. Use them to mark every day you’ve read a book, or in front of each title in a list. $1

Stickers with a book review template

Make formatting bujo pages easy with these review stickers encouraging you to record your thoughts and favorite quote from each book you read. $5

stickers noting star ratings from 1/2 star to 5 stars

My favorite thing about these star rating stickers is that they come in half-star increments! That’s the granularity I require. $3

sticker sheet of books arranged with hot drinks, glasses, and book ribbons

Sometimes you just need some stickers for the aesthetics. This cozy sticker sheet has a lovely autumnal color palette. $3

Inserts for Your Bujo Book Tracker

book journal insert with each page dedicated to recording details of a book

Paper Penguin is my go-to for journal inserts because there are so many options for journal size. Other products even let you choose the paper type, for my fellow fountain pen lovers in search of Tomoe River paper with a dot grid. $6 and up

single page monthly book tracker styled as piled of books on a shelf

For your year in reading at a glance, tuck this single page monthly book tracker into your bullet journal. $5

Stencils for Your Bujo Book Tracker

stencil sheet of open books

Bookish stencils are an excellent way to add visual interest to your bujo book tracker. You can stencil in an empty book and color it in to depict percent read, for example. $10

stencil depicting books on a shelf

I love book trackers that use a depiction of a shelf full of books. Trace this bookshelf stencil into your journal and fill in each title on the spine as you read throughout the year. $7

Washi Tape for Your Bujo Book Tracker

washi tape styled to look like library cards

Washi tape is an easy way to jazz up a book tracker. These library card washi tapes have great vintage vibes. $4

washi tape with cats, books, and plants

If you’re someone who likes books, plants, and cats, this cute washi tape has your number. $4

washi tape with cartoon animals reading

If washi tape festooned with little creatures nestled with books and pillows don’t inspire you to settle in for a good reading session, I don’t know what will. $5

Paper Clips for Your Bujo Book Tracker

paper clips with girls reading embroidered onto felt

I like to mark important and often-used places in my bullet journal with paper clips. One of these reading girls would be perfect for marking a key page of your reading tracker. $4

paper clip with a kawaii smiley faced book saying "book lover"

A little kawaii book clip would be another adorable way to easily access a reading tracker page in your bullet journal. $5

If you need to find a bullet journal to turn into your bujo book tracker, check out our recommendations. If you want more stuff to help your overall journaling practice, there are some really fun supplies we suggest. Here’s to a well-recorded reading journey this new year!

Book Storage for Small Spaces: 11 Creative Solutions https://bookriot.com/book-storage-for-small-spaces/ Fri, 30 Dec 2022 11:37:00 +0000 https://bookriot.com/?p=526236 - Kate Krug

As readers, it can be a constant struggle to find space to store our book collections. And if you’re in a smaller space (or your books are housed in a smaller room) it can be difficult to make the best use of the space, or to find book storage solutions for small spaces that actually work. There is also the challenge of filling a small space but not making it look overwhelming or cramped.

Personal taste plays a factor as well. At my previous apartment, I had zero space (and no money) for shelves, so I just stacked books until the piles were swaying and it was impossible to take books out if I wanted to. I had friends who visited who hated the look. I kind of appreciated the aesthetic.

We know some tried and true design secrets help to open smaller spaces: Tall and narrow shelving is always a good bet. Finding ways to incorporate storage into more objects or established fixtures, such as ceiling space or turning hallways into bookshelf walls. Taking advantage of small nooks and crannies to DIY unique shelves that fit.

So let’s talk solutions. This article is all about easy shelving or storage solutions that can be easily purchased or assembled. Not mentioned here are larger design projects such as building shelves into a staircase, under the bed, or in an unused fireplace. There are some related articles linked at the end of this list that can help if you are interested in a bigger design project. Onto the best book storage for small spaces ideas!

Rotating Bookshelf

White rotating bookshelf

Maximize a small space with a bookshelf that allows 360-degree storage! These bookshelves come in various sizes and can be used for anything from larger textbooks to children’s books to comics and graphic novels. Pictured is Nisorpa’s version, $196.

Double-Sided Hanging Bookshelf

Photo of Hanging Bookshelf

Another way to maximize your shelf space is to take advantage of both “sides” of the shelf. These hanging shelves from Etsy have elastic loops on the underside to hold individual books and the top space can also be utilized. $93

Corner Shelves

Photo of a white corner bookshelf

Have you ever had a room or apartment that randomly had a weird corner that jutted out or had to allow for an AC unit? Corner bookshelves are great for filling and making use of these awkward spaces. $120

Tabletop Bookstand

Photo of a brown wooden tabletop bookstand

These tabletop bookstands are great for displaying multiple cookbooks at once and help to open up precious tabletop space. $49

Bedside Shelf

Bedside bookshelf

To make a bedside table, use attachable shelves that hook onto your bed frame to give some extra space for book storage, drinks, and more. $35

Tall, Narrow Shelving Unit

Photo of a tall, thin bookshelf

With a total width of 7 inches, these four-decker shelves are the perfect size for displaying your favorite reads. These shelves come in a variety of colors and are super easy to move around. $190

Transparent Furniture Pieces

Photo of a clear, acrylic side table holding books

These clear, acrylic side tables help give the illusion of empty space while simultaneously adding opportunities to display and store your books. $168

Floating Wall Shelves

Photo of floating bookshelves on a wall

When you run out of shelf space, create new book stacks with floating mounted shelves. You can also create an illusion of ceiling-high stacks by strategically placing the shelves on walls! $76 for a four-pack.

Room Divider Shelves

Brown bookshelf used as a room divider in a small apartment

For studio apartments or adding some separation between different spaces, consider using a bookshelf as a room divider. It saves space vs. having the bookshelf flat against the wall and adds interest to your room. $120

Under-the-Bed Storage

Photo of a black book basket that has different romance tropes written on the front

Maybe not ideal for displaying, but taking advantage of the under-the-bed storage can help open up shelf space for books you want to show off. But these book baskets are so cute, we understand if you can’t bear to keep them hidden. $19

Corner Bookshelf

Corner bookshelves are ideal for minimizing wall space and taking advantage of an area that can be difficult to style. $53

Some celebrities feel larger than life, as if they’ll always be with us. Angela Lansbury had not only been performing long before I came into the world, and through my entire life so far, but it also felt like she’d just always be here. Which is why I was incredibly surprised, and saddened, when I heard about her passing recently. I was already planning this post, inspired by a new YA release added into the Murder, She Wrote universe: By the Time You Read This I’ll Be Gone by Stephanie Kuehn.

Of course, I do not expect people to live forever, but some people feel like they have and they will. And in many ways Angela Lansbury will through so many iconic roles, including Mrs. Potts in Beauty and the Beast and Jessica Fletcher in Murder, She Wrote.

Everyone who grew up watching Murder, She Wrote most likely has a sentimental memory. Surely (Don’t call me Shirley!) that is why the reruns still play all the time and people who grew up with the show watch it as a comfort show? Or maybe you’re convinced Jessica Fletcher was a serial killer, the only explanation for the amount of dead bodies around her, and you’re trying to prove your theory. Whatever the case, I’ve rounded up some fantastic items perfect for Jessica Fletcher fans.

sweatshirt with a smiling Jessica Fletcher and the text saying I killed them I killed them all

Murder, She Wrote I Killed Them All Christmas Jumper ($30): This fan theory will always crack me up. Added onto a Xmas sweater it is just *chef’s kiss* for hilarious holiday party attire. But honestly, I’d wear this year round.

a beige tote bag with screen printed images of Jessica Fletcher in many outfits

Jessica Fletcher Tote Bag ($10): Honor Jessica Fletcher’s style in the ’80s and ’90s with this tote bag!

sticker of a graphic image of Jessica Fletcher shooting a prop gun with a flag that says Bang

Murder She Wrote Jessica Fletcher Opening Credits Sticker ($6): Fans certainly remember the scene of Jessica Fletcher shooting a prop gun – this and all the jogging scenes in the intro probably stick out the most to me all these years later.

a prayer candle with an image of Angela Lansbury

Angela Lansbury – Jessica Fletcher – Celebrity Saint Prayer Candles ($20): It is important to remember to light your prayer candle so St. Jessica Fletcher will watch over you. Yes, this is exactly how these work.

enamel pins of a book that says murder she wrote and one of angela lansbury with so fletch written below

Murder, She Wrote Inspired Enamel Pin Set ($24): This is perfect for splitting between two best friends who are Jessica Fletcher fans. Also, Regina George is somewhere seething.

small pouch case with images of Jessica Fletcher printed on black fabric

Jessica Fletcher Sachet ($7): Keep all your goodies in this small case! I love the ’80s vibe added to the print and can imagine all the smiles from people when you bust this out to pull out your money or lipstick.

Murder She Wrote jigsaw puzzle

Puzzle, She Solved ($25): Work on a Jessica Fletcher jigsaw puzzle while watching the show or listening to one of the audiobooks!

white mug with black printed typewriter and text saying Now I may be wrong but frankly I doubt it

Jessica Fletcher Quote ($19): For fans of letting everyone know you’re always right.

white mug with blue printed design of Angela Lansbury

Angela Lansbury 11oz mug ($15): If you prefer your hot drinks in a mug without text and are a fan of the style of blue and white ceramics, here’s a lovely mug.

blue tee with a doodle of a lighthouse that says Cabot Cove

Cabot Cove shirt, Maine T-Shirt ($16): Last, but certainly not least, you can’t have Jessica Fletcher without Cabot Cove.

When I was introduced to the world of Dungeons & Dragons many moons ago, no one warned me about the risk of DICE HOARDING. It is easy to fall in love with fantastical worlds filled with magical creatures and ridiculous adventures. I can spend hours pouring over books, both in the real world and in The House of Knowledge. But that would be nothing compared to the days spent circling any gaming convention, trying to find the perfect D&D dice set for my next campaign. I may or may not have been That Person who chose their character purely based on the matching dice set. I may or may not be That Person who has backup dice when recovering from multiple Critical Hit betrayals (with a suitable dice jail where they can think about their actions). And I most certainly am not the person who dares to mix their dice sets. What kind of monster are you?!

However, if you are reading all this and are unsure what I am talking about, fellow Book Rioter Alice has a great guide to help you. Alice has provided some simple steps on How to Create an Awesome D&D Character.

Or you can let the dice choose the character for you. What could go wrong with that?

Image of metallic dnd dice with dark blue enamel panels, dark grey thick border edges and featuring gold numbers and gold weapons on each panel. Weapons include battle axes and war hammers
Image from studiogaja on Etsy

Metal Dice Set from studiogaja on Etsy ($25)

My primary character is a Barbarian: Taklinn of Balderk, a female Dwarf Barbarian with a Warhammer named “Diplomacy”. These dice called to me from across the ages. Because let’s face it, all we want is a solid set of dice with a bit of weight to them. And plenty of weapons. All the weapons. Bonus points if it comes with a stein of ale.

Bard

image of blue sandston gemstone dnd dice with gold music motif

Blue Sandstone Gemstone DnD Dice Set from CrystalMaggie on Etsy ($61)

Contrary to the Barbarian above, Bards will prefer a lightweight set of dice. It works better for sleight-of-hand and a quick getaway when the charm fails. This set is super sexy, with just enough sparkle to gain attention. But not too pretty! It’s for the Bard to shine, not the dice.

Cleric

Image of set clear resin dnd dice with liquid core of white glitter featuring gold numbers

Black Galaxy liquid core DnD dice set from LittleCircleBeads on Etsy ($47)

Roll the dice and watch the galaxy roll with you. The liquid glitter core in these dice gives a celestial feel to these D&D dice. Clerics are priestly champions who wield divine magic and serve a higher power. Is it any surprise for a cleric to want this power to rest in their hands?

Druid

a photo of a clear dice set with real mushrooms and flowers inside

Forest Dice Set with Real Mushrooms by OpiumNature on Etsy ($60)

Stay in touch with the powers of nature, held within the confines of your own forest dice. The terrarium-like appearance creates the perfect D&D dice for druids, though you may want a little more space before you unleash your inner Owl-Bear.

Fighter

Image of metal dnd dice set with images of armour and standard weapons on each panel and small blood splatter
Image from Luffleberry on Etsy

Pit Fighter Metal Dice Set from Luffleberry on Etsy ($39)

One of the original five D&D characters and the master of combat skills, the Fighter is a solid addition to any group of adventurers and should be rewarded in kind. A balance of armour and weapons will assist with every roll of the dice. And that touch of blood splatter? Simply a reminder of past work.

Monk

image of mini dnd dice set in milky opaque black and white with silver numbers on panels
Image from TheRubyDragon on Etsy

Yin Yang Mini Dice Set from TheRubyDragon on Etsy ($39)

The Monk cares not for the material world. The Monk is a master of martial arts, focused on the pursuit of physical and spiritual perfection. The dice are merely an extension of this purpose. They should be small, inconsequential, and symbolise the balance of body and spirit.

Paladin

Image of dnd dice set with white enamel panels, gold numbers and gold edges
Image from Riftgate on Etsy

White + Gold Dice Set from Riftgate on Etsy ($30)

Thou art looking for a set of D&D Dice to guide ye on thy journey. Thou art bound by sacred oath. Thy dice are as pure as thy vows, blessed with faith and light. They are also easy to clean. Because that’s a Paladin thing too, right?

Ranger

Image of metal dnd dice with a stone finish and numbers with a slight dragon look to script
Image from Luffleberry on Etsy

Stone Dragon Metal D&D Dice Set by Luffleberry on Etsy ($36)

Keep it simple, stick with the shadows, and hone your skills. These dice are as weathered as you are, with an almost stone-like finish for the hardiest of Rangers. No flourish or flair; just get the job done.

Rogue

Image of obsidian gemstone dnd dice with holographic number detail, with fuck you for D20 and fuck me for D1

Raised Holographic Obsidian Gemstone D&D Dice Set with Text by CrytalMaggie on Etsy ($67)

Well, aren’t you a dastardly scoundrel? Thought you could get away with it too. But then the dice decided to have their own play. Out of all the characters who need to hear this, YOU need it the most: Don’t mess with the dice. And you know exactly the value of the roll. It says it right there on the dice.

Sorcerer

Image of clear resin dnd dice set featuring small undead skulls with brown numbers
Image from TheCrookedTavern on Etsy

Undead Skull RPG Dice Set from TheCrookedTavern on Etsy ($15)

We’ve got some serious Mystery Men/Janeane Garofalo vibes happening here. Sure, we’re not bowling with dear ol’ Dad, but these little pals are willing to share some magic with us today.

Warlock

Image of purple amethyst dnd dice set with gold numbering displaying arcane-like image of eyes looking through portals
Image from URWizards

Full Set Amethyst Polyhedral Dice Set from URWizards on Etsy ($68)

For those who gazed into the vortex and whispered, “Agreed.” These polished amethyst D&D dice will remind you of the bargain you made. They are watching you and every roll you take.

Wizard

Image of metal hollow dnd dice set with polished metal cage and numbers on cage links
Image from EmberDice on Etsy

The Arcane Dice Set – Metal Hollow Dice from EmberDice on Etsy ($174)

Wizards are the original magic wielders of D&D. They are scholars with the skill and expertise to manipulate the structures of reality. They require a D&D dice set that matches their talents; not quite of this world nor matching any other D&D dice set you have ever seen. Probably the only thing to survive when you cast Fireball.

Artificer

Image of dnd dice made of dark grey hematite with blue number and blue circuit board details on each panel
Image from Level Up Dice

Hematite Dice Set with Chip Glyphic design from Level Up Dice ($95)

One of the newest additions to the D&D Character Classes, artificers are masters of invention and technology. They use their smarts (and a touch of magic) to unlock extraordinary capabilities within objects. Artificers like something new and shiny to work with.

Blood Hunter

Image of metallic dnd dice featuring hollow skulls and angel wings, with blood spatters across panels

RPG Dripping Blood DnD Metal Dice Set from tingtingoneshoo on Etsy ($37)

The newest character class in the books, Blood Hunters are willing (and a little eager) to suffer whatever it takes to win. They are warriors determined to protect the innocent. Nothing stands in their way…at least nothing will survive. This D&D dice set may look a little macabre and necromancer-ish, but it is an accurate portrayal of what a Blood Hunter will do to achieve their goals.

Dungeon Master

Image of set of resin dnd dice in metal tin with wooden lid saying "Behold!!! The Ducklings of Doom" Transparent dice with light purple duck inside
Image from TheWizardsVault

The Ducklings of Doom Box and Dice Set from TheWizardsVault on Etsy ($34)

We cannot forget our Dungeon Masters! The Storyteller, the Harbinger of Doom, the Voice of both Comedy and Tragedy. They who weave the adventure and bring upon the rewards…and the pain. BEHOLD! The perfect D&D dice set for our beloved Dungeon Master! Complete with mini purple rubber duckies set in clear resin.

Once you have the right D&D dice set to match your character, make sure to find a suitable case to protect them. You can find a range of pouches, tins, leather cases, and boxes available on Etsy and online. My personal absolute fave is this wooden engraved box with a very sweet and neat magnetic closing system to snap in place. My 16-year-old son uses it to protect his Artificer-style Obsidian dice with circuitry detailing. Both were purchased from Level Up Dice, found online here.

Literary Printables for Last Minute Gifting https://bookriot.com/literary-printables-for-last-minute-gifting/ Wed, 21 Dec 2022 11:37:00 +0000 https://bookriot.com/?p=526740 - Jesse Doogan

It happened again. You made it all the way to the week of Christmas and you were sure you had crossed everyone off your gift list, but there, right in the fold, is the one you forgot. Fortunately for you, your beloved recipient is a reader, and there are all sorts of options for last-minute gifts for readers.

My personal favorite? A digital gift card to the independent bookstore of their choice popped into a card with a downloadable, printable bookmark. It feels a little more thoughtful as a package than just a gift card, and it allows you to inject a little personality into the gift. Or maybe you’d like to find some bookish art that you can quickly print, frame, and wrap?

The best way to print these sorts of downloads, I’ve found, is usually to take the file to a local office supply store or print shop. They will have a wide selection of paper options for you, the quality of the print will be much higher than what you can do at home, and it will probably only end up costing a few dollars at the most. For most downloads, you’ll want to use a heavy matte (not shiny) cardstock. (Some print shops might be able to laminate the bookmarks for you, but that will add to the cost.) This is a great guide to working with a local print shop.

I took the liberty of picking out some of my favorite literary bookmarks and printable art that’s available on Etsy. My goal in these selections was to only include original art. As far as I can tell, these are pieces of art created by the shop owner or related, so you can feel good about supporting an artist.

Now, be quick! There’s only a few printing days until Christmas!

Caiterbug typewriter art

I’ve seen a lot of typewriter art in my literary art trawls, and I loved the way that this one brings the star from its quote into the typewriter itself with those stars. The way it’s displayed in this product shot makes me think it would be great in a gallery wall with a lot of colors. $5

top-down books printable art

While actually piling books this way may stress me out, I loved this unusual angle and the soft colors. Books from above! $6

book stack with cats download printable

Look at this sleepy little kitty face! This is one you will definitely want to get professionally printed. Even if you did want to use up an entire black ink cartridge, I don’t think a home printer could handle these fine lines! $7

If you’re looking for more bookish art, here is some exciting and original bookish art. And if you want more printables, here are some lovely printable coloring pages. Looking for something more elaborate than a printable? Try these origami bookmarks.

I can’t be the only one who lets the holidays creep up on me. Yes, I’ve seen decorations everywhere, but stores start decorating so early I always dismiss it. The inundation of emails has me mass deleting without thinking about how far along we are in the season. I’ve been getting dozens of them a day for weeks. Get out of my inbox!

It’s like the avocado ripening on the counter: not ripe for days, perfectly ripe for one day, overripe. I thought I had more time! How did we move from the holidays being weeks away to being overripe? Never fear, fellow distracted shoppers. I have compiled a list of amazing last minute gifts under $100 that you can get shipped right to your door. Or right to the recipient’s door. Whatever’s faster.
