The Last to Vanish opens with the disappearance of a journalist who is investigating a string of vanishings in the resort town of Cutter’s Pass—will its dark secrets finally be revealed?

What readers find especially scary and thrilling will depend on the person, of course, but there is something singular about the experience of reading a thriller set outdoors. Many people say that being out in nature for extended periods of time — especially while under duress — reveals a person’s true character. The character that would exist if all of our manmade comforts were stripped away and we were thrust into a realm of uncertain survival. Luckily for many of us, we can imagine what we might do from the comfort of our couches as unfortunate protagonists battle the elements…and whatever else is out to get them.

We asked you to share your favorite thrillers set outdoors, and here are your recommendations:

A Step Too Far by Lisa Gardner

These Silent Woods by Kimi Cunningham Grant

The Girl Who Loved Tom Gordon by Stephen King

The Sanatorium by Sarah Pearse

Sorrowland by  Rivers Solomon

Force of Nature by Jane Harper

They All Fall Down by Rachel Howzell Hall

Heaven, My Home by Attica Locke

Celine by Peter Heller

The Marsh King’s Daughter by Karen Dionne

Riot Recommendation: 15 of the Best Books About Mindfulness https://bookriot.com/books-about-mindfulness/ Mon, 27 Sep 2021 10:25:00 +0000 https://bookriot.com/?p=481188

Who really understands the concept of karma? Half the time when people are referencing it, it sounds like some form of revenge. But karma is a much deeper and richer concept than that. As explained by Sadhguru, yogi & mystic, karma means action. Sadhguru turns the tables by showing us clearly that karma is an empowering possibility for taking charge of our lives by choosing how we respond to what is happening to us. With celebrity fans from Will Smith to Tom Brady, this enlightening book offers in depth insights on the concept of Karma and shows how to achieve true happiness.

One particular superpower of readers is that we can transport ourselves anywhere through books. We can venture to the most remote places that exist on this green earth, or even to the rich tapestry of some imagined land. Well, what about when you want to focus that superpower inward? This is what it means to be mindful. It is the ability to be fully in the moment with ourselves, with all our attention not focused on future or past events, but completely concerned with the here and now. There are a fews ways to attain mindfulness, but perhaps the most commonly known way is through meditation. Even though you don’t need anything to be more mindful — or anything to meditate — it can still be a hard thing to achieve and takes some practice.

Last week we asked you what were the best books for improving performance, creativity, or neural connections through mindfulness. Here are the books you recommended!

How to See by Thich Nhat Hanh

Practicing Mindfulness by Matthew Sockolov

The Headspace Guide to Meditation & Mindfulness by Andy Puddicombe

I Am Peace: A Book of Mindfulness by Susan Verde

You Are a Lion! And Other Fun Yoga Poses by Tae-eun Yoo

The Book of Joy: Lasting Happiness in a Changing World by Dalai Lama XIV and Desmond Tutu

How to Meditate by Pema Chödrön

The Urban Monk by Pedram Shojai

Breath: The New Science of a Lost Art by James Nestor

Strength in Stillness: The Power of Transcendental Meditation by Bob Roth

Zen Mind, Beginner’s Mind by Shunryu Suzuki

Into the Heart of Mindfulness by Ed Halliwell

Just Breathe: Meditation, Mindfulness, Movement, and More by Mallika Chopra

Mindful Kids by  Whitney Stewart

The Mindful Teen by  Dzung X. Vo

Riot Recommendation: 15 of Your Favorite Books With Eccentric Main Characters https://bookriot.com/books-with-eccentric-main-characters/ Mon, 12 Jul 2021 10:31:00 +0000 https://bookriot.com/?p=473297

For fans of The Keeper of Lost Things and Evvie Drake Starts Over comes a funny and tender debut about a reclusive artist whose collection has gotten out of control—but whose unexpected friendship with a pair of new neighbors might be just what she needs to start over. Quirky and charming, big-hearted and moving, The Missing Treasures of Amy Ashton proves that it’s never too late to let go of the things that don’t matter...and welcome the people who do.

One of the best parts of reading is being able to absorb yourself in someone else’s life — one that looks very different from your own. Perhaps that’s why eccentric characters in fiction are so appealing: they offer a chance to walk in the fish tank platform shoes of someone who likely makes choices you never would. Then again, if you consider yourself something of an eccentric, then reading about other weirdos (I say that with affection!) is a way to find community and to perhaps add a few more quirks to your life.

We asked you to share your favorite books with delightfully different main characters, and here are your recommendations:

Conjure Women by Afia Atakora

The 100-Year-Old Man Who Climbed Out the Window and Disappeared by Jonas Jonasson

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole

Konosuba by Natsume Akatsuki and Masahito Watari

The Empress of Salt and Fortune by Nghi Vo

The Secret History by Donna Tartt

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy

Invisible Life of Addie LaRue by V.E. Schwab

Geek Love by Katherine Dunn

Miss Benson’s Beetle by Rachel Joyce

Kafka on the Shore by Haruki Murakami

The House in the Cerulean Sea by T.J. Klune

A Man called Ove by Fredrik Backman

Girl with the Dragon Tattoo by Stieg Larsson

Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine by Gail Honeyman

I don’t need to tell you that it’s been a trying 15 months. The pandemic has affected everyone differently, but average mental health has seen a significant decline. We all found our own ways to cope. Maybe you took up meditation and healthy eating during this time and found new hobbies you never had time for before — or, and probably more likely, maybe you prioritized only the most essential things and weren’t able to take care of yourself the way you would like to.

Whether you’re fully vaccinated and beginning to reenter the world or whether that possibility is still far off for you, now is a good time to work on your wellbeing, mentally and physically. If you made New Year’s resolutions six months ago, perhaps they’re worth revisiting. And what better way to work on yourself than to pick up a book about wellness? We asked you: what do you think are the best books about wellness? Here are the books you recommended!
